For the Roman empire, I would agree; but expanded more generally to life itself, we should not be so much surprised as happy that we have subsisted so long. Happy, somewhat in a naïve way, but also deeply knowledgeable. This is the only state a creature with as much knowledge available to us can remain healthy in, I think.
